On Thursday night, Miley Cyrus returned to a familiar place as she appeared poolside before a crowd of about 200 to perform her smash hit “Flowers” at the celebrity haunt Chateau Marmont.

The Grammy-winning pop star hasn’t toured since 2022, and has said she’s “tired of sleeping on a moving bus,” but recently she’s been performing for small crowds at the storied hotel in West Hollywood, Calif., taking the microphone for several sultry lounge-singer style performances.

This time, it was to celebrate scents, specifically Gucci Flora, the perfume that Ms. Cyrus has been the face of since 2021. The intermingling of fame and fashion was thick in the air.

“Why am I singing and you’re not?” Ms. Cyrus asked as she swayed before the crowd wearing a little black Gucci dress with a chunky gold necklace and black sunglasses.

“Is that Kendall Jenner doing harmonies?” she joked, ad-libbing a bit as she performed “Flowers.”

“Paint my nails Ancora red,” she sang, changing the lyric of “cherry red” to reference the color that Gucci’s creative director, Sabato De Sarno, who was also in the crowd, presented in 2023.

The crowd cheered as she continued the post-breakup anthem, singing:
“Started to cry, but then remembered…
I’m the face of Gucci.”

Guests entered the party on the warm July evening through a narrow brick staircase lined with greenery and yellow, pink and white roses, which led into a lush leafy area enclosed by palm trees, birds of paradise plants and a lemon tree filled with fruit.

Celebrities and models peppered the crowd in a vibrant mix of leopard prints, checked blazers and summer florals, standing near the electric blue-hued pool.

The model Kendall Jenner and the actress Salma Hayek were in and out of the party quickly, but the pop star Kim Petras spent much of the night leading a small dance party with friends near D.J. Alex Chapman’s booth.

Ms. Petras said that, personally, she loves the smell of gardenias, as well as less celebrated scents like keratin on fresh sets of hair extensions, and pretzels — “I’m German!” she said, laughing.

Rumer Willis, the actress and daughter of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore, arrived in a vibrant orange dress and a chartreuse bag alongside Maeve Reilly, the celebrity stylist who has worked with Hailey Bieber and Megan Fox.

Chloe Kim, the Olympic snowboarder from California, was chatting with friends while wearing a pair of low slung, unzipped jeans, a delicate body chain, and a red, white and blue Gucci sweater.

“I’m wearing the Maison Francis Kurkdjian, Gentle Fluidity, gold edition,” Ms. Kim said referencing the high-end fragrance brand. “I love florals — jasmine, rose, lavender — even in my drinks or, like, food.”

Cigarette smoke and layers of perfume floated around the pool as the crowd sampled floral-inspired hors d’oeuvres and desserts. Hanging by the pool were Kaytranada, the Canadian music producer and D.J.; Symone, the drag queen and model; and Claudia Sulewski, the fashion and beauty YouTuber who arrived with her partner, the musician Finneas.

Law Roach, the stylist famed for his work with the actress Zendaya, greeted friends and happily chatted about his scent preferences. “I hate the smell of miserable people,” he quipped with a smile.

Mr. Roach doesn’t have an everyday perfume, but he appreciates the role of a signature scent.

“I love when you work with someone, or work around someone, and you can smell them coming, or you can smell they’ve been there,” he said. “I think that is so powerful and so sexy, and it almost has this feeling of legacy, in a way.”

As the night wound down, Yves Tumor, the elusive experimental musician who’s spent time at a fragrance school in Paris, lit a cigarette and contemplated the power of putting on the right scent.

“It completely changes how I feel. Sometimes I won’t wear anything, just to, like, pheromone max out,” they said. “Or sometimes I’ll put on a certain thing, but I never do it for other people. It’s usually just for me.”
